Foundation Program

Building the Foundation for Academic Success

The Foundation Program prepares students for the linguistic, analytical, and academic demands of undergraduate study through integrated English and Mathematics pathways. Students develop the language, quantitative reasoning, research, communication, and critical thinking skills needed for success in degree-level study at American International University.

Our Mission

Our mission is to deliver high-quality English and mathematics instruction that prepares students for success in an English-based academic environment. In one academic year, learners advance from foundational proficiency to university-ready skills through intensive training in language, quantitative reasoning, and research. Grounded in best practices, the program promotes critical thinking, active learning, and cross-cultural competence through a structured curriculum, continuous assessment, and individualized support in a student-centered setting.

Core Academic Competencies

The Foundation Program provides integrated English and mathematics pathways that prepare students for the linguistic, analytical, and academic demands of undergraduate study across AIU's Schools of Architecture and Design, Business, Education, Engineering and Computing, and Arts and Sciences. Curriculum and course learning outcomes are aligned with university-level expectations to ensure academic readiness and successful matriculation into degree programs.

The Foundation Experience

  • Academic English: Develop the reading, writing, speaking, and academic literacy skills required for university study.
  • Quantitative Reasoning: Strengthen mathematical reasoning and analytical problem-solving skills.
  • Research: Develop the ability to locate, evaluate, and use academic information effectively.
  • Critical Thinking: Analyze information, evaluate evidence, and solve academic problems.
  • Communication: Express ideas clearly through written, oral, and collaborative academic work.
  • Independent Learning: Build the responsibility, confidence, and learning habits expected of successful university students.

Our Approach to Learning

The Foundation Program employs a student-centered instructional model delivered through 90-minute learning blocks designed to support sustained engagement, guided practice, feedback, and reflection. Instruction emphasizes critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and authentic academic tasks aligned with undergraduate expectations. The curriculum is supported through differentiated instruction, continuous formative assessment, and the integrated use of Canvas and National Geographic Spark to ensure instructional consistency, evidence-based teaching practices, and ongoing monitoring of student achievement.

Your Pathway to Success

Admission to AIU  →  Placement Assessment  →  Foundation Program  →  Undergraduate Degree Program

The Foundation Program is an integral part of the AIU academic experience, developing students' academic English and quantitative reasoning while fostering inquiry, active engagement, and independence as learners.

Admission and Placement

Students admitted to AIU complete a placement assessment to determine whether Foundation coursework is required. Based on their placement results and degree requirements, students are placed in the appropriate English and/or Math Foundation courses.
