Gergean – A Local Tradition

Gergean is a special day in Ramadan that is celebrated in Kuwait. It is usually celebrated on the 13th, 14th, and 15th day of Ramadan marking the middle of the holy month. During this celebration, adults hand out candy and nuts to children after iftar time for them to enjoy. The children also walk door to door singing cheerful songs to their neighbors to earn some candy. The children even dress in special traditional outfits for Gergean during school days, as it is celebrated in schools since the tradition is becoming more and more commercialized. In the past, children’s parents used to sow them dolls and toys filled with candy and treats, however, this tradition has slowly decreased within the age of technology.  Gergean is a special time for all children in Kuwait and we hope families enjoy this special occasion together across the country!
