Healthy eating choices are important for university students

There are many benefits to adopting a healthy eating lifestyle while you’re in college.  Most notably is that good food is good for the brain. Studies have shown that those who regularly eat healthy, nutrient-rich food, eat a balanced diet, and avoid fatty and sugary foods, are able to process new information faster and retain information better. Healthy eating habits have also been linked to improved mood, less anxiety, and better sleep.

Eating a healthy diet is good for your physical health too. You will have more energy and burn fat more effectively, helping to keep off extra pounds. Here are three easy healthy eating tips you should try to stay in shape both physically and mentally.

Tip number one, and probably the most important, don't skip breakfast.  The most important meal of the day should be packed full of nutrients to help get you through the day.

Number two, drink plenty of water.  Drinking water reduces your appetite, keeps your body functioning properly, and helps fight fatigue.  Drinking soda and sugary juices dehydrate you and shock your system with an overload of sugar.

Thirdly, snacking is okay if it's healthy.  Young people need constant refueling.  Snacks are important to keep your body going, just make sure they are healthy.  Fruit, nuts, and granola make perfect, quick, and easy options.   Follow these three tips for a healthier lifestyle.

AIU offers a variety of dining venues on campus with many healthy eating options.  FRESHII, for example, has salads and bowls full of vegetables, legumes, and proteins to help students build muscle and energy needed to power through the busy day.  Take a look across campus and see what it has to offer you healthy and delicious eating options.
